Greater Kokstad Municipality viewpoint

GREETINGS to the people of Kokstad.

2015/16 Financial year end

The 2015/16 financial year is coming to an end and I thank council, municipal officials, ratepayers, business, stakeholders and the community for the commitment, patience and dedication throughout the year.

With limited resources at our disposal we were able to give service to the community of Kokstad especially roads, electricity, etc. We are aware that a lot has to be done to overcome some of the challenges faced by the people of Kokstad.

Using our integrated development plan we will continue to attend to the needs of the people in the next financial year. As we conclude this financial year, I have the pleasure of announcing that Coulter, Buckley and Barker streets are complete and thank the community for being patient with us especially those who were affected during construction.

In terms of our infrastructure development, we have projects that are going to be rolled over to the 2016/17 financial year and I urge the community to work with us as we take our town to the next level.

Youth Environmental Service programme launched

June was filled with activities and initiatives directed at youth development. On 28 June the MEC of Human Settlement and Public Works, Ravi Pillay will be in Kokstad to launch the Youth Environmental Service (Yes) programme.

This is another initiative by KZN Department of Public Works in collaboration with Greater Kokstad Municipality to wrap up Youth Month in style. This event will be held at Riverview Stadium, starting at 8am. The people of Kokstad are invited to take part in building the future of our town.

Pre-school sports day

In line with the promotion of Early Childhood Development GKM, in collaboration with Department of Social Development and Department of Sports and Recreation held a pre-school sports day yesterday, 23 June. The event was held at Riverview Stadium and 15 pre-schools participated and played soccer, netball, hoola hoops, egg-and-spoon race and more.

It is our responsibility as government to bring initiatives that talk to childhood development and sport is a key driver in building a united South Africa.

Winter is already visible in Kokstad I warn the citizens to be aware of wild fires. Make sure you extinguish coal heaters before you go to sleep. Children must use heaters under adult supervision.

Let us be responsible citizens in winter. Enkosi.
