Greater Kokstad Municipality viewpoint

2016-07-01 06:00

GREETINGS to the people of Kokstad.
Electricity cable theft
The theft of electricity that was discovered by our electrical department is very disturbing news for the municipality. This was discovered at eMoyeni, Bhambayi and Marikana informal settlements. While the municipality is planning to electrify informal settlements, people are stealing cables and doing illegal connections.
We, as the municipality, want to send a very strong warning to those who responsible for this wrongdoing. We are going to act very decisively to everyone who is caught stealing cables. The mighty hand of the law is behind you. Besides that, people must realise they are endangering lives by carrying out illegal connections and lives are lost due to electric shock. The most disturbing part is that people are stealing from their own community because government has no money and the money we use to deliver services comes from the community.
We use the money to repair the cables from the budget meant for other community needs. We also appeal to the community not to be silent on this matter. If you don’t report electricity theft you are shooting yourself in the foot because this is your money you are stealing.
The municipality will lay criminal charges against anyone caught stealing electricity because our patience in this matter has now come to an end.

2016/2017 Financial year
Today we begin the new 2016/2017 financial year. As usual there is no time to rest to us because our people want services and we will hit the ground running. Management has already put all their work plans in place and from today we start implementation of council resolutions that emanated from our integrated development plan. The community has given us a mandate through IDP process.
My responsibility is to make sure that mandate is translated into action that is responsive to community needs.
Enkosi bahlali.
