Greater Kokstad Municipality viewpoint

2016-09-23 06:00

GREETINGS to the people of Kokstad.
GKM Mayor introduction sessions
The Mayor of Greater Kokstad Municipality Councillor Bheki Mtolo is on a mission to strengthen relations between stakeholders and the municipality.
On Wednesday 21 September he met with Swartberg Farmers’ Association where they discussed important issues that affect and benefit both parties. The meeting went well and we were happy that farmers raised some important issues that will assist us in building a better municipality in years to come. Constructive criticisms that were raised by the association were noted by the municipality and will receive attention. As we are trying to build a caring municipality we will be meeting other stakeholders because we want to get them on board going forward and we hope for their full co-operation.

Know your Councillor campaign
May I also thank the office of the speaker, Councillor Zolani Mhlongo, for making sure that the community meets with the newly elected councillors. The campaign has been going around all wards and we are happy that the community met with councillors and raised some of the burning issues. The municipality will be announcing dates for IDP Road shows soon where the community will raise their priorities to the municipality for planning and budgeting purposes. This will happen after this campaign as people would have felt the touch of their councillors.

Illegal occupation of land
The municipality is noting with a great concern the illegal occupation of land that took place last week. We want to appeal to the people of Kokstad that there is no policy in government that permits the illegal occupation of land. This also disrupts town planning for the municipality which will affect future development. We fully understand the challenge of land in the municipality, however, we cannot condone the illegal ways of attaining it. We appeal to those involved to refrain from doing this. I must also thank law enforcement agencies for responding quickly to that challenge and we hope they will work with us in dealing with this challenge.
Siyaqhuba, enkosi.
