Provincial Safa play-offs

From 10 to 12 June, Safa Harry Gwala will be hosting the provincial play-offs and all games will be played at the Riverview Stadium. Football clubs from all the district municipalities in KZN will be in Kokstad. In as much as they are coming here for a sporting event, they will also contribute to our local economic development. I encourage residents to attend these games and also support the Kokstad-based Eastern Rangers FC that will be representing Harry Gwala District.

Youth empowerment service

June has been declared Youth Month by the government. As GKM we not only focus on celebrations that commemorate Youth Month, our focus is also on education and youth empowerment.

On 14 June GKMm, in collaboration with the KZN Department of Public Works will be launching the youth empowerment service at Riverview Stadium.

We have identified 80 young men and women (10 per ward) to be part of this learnership programme and Public Works has identified Wildlands Conservation Trust to be the implementing agent. These pupils will be equipped with skills on how to conserve the environment in their communities and receive accreditation certificates in house-keeping, health and hygiene, customer care and food preparation.

They will also receive other training and certificates as exit opportunities that will enable them to be absorbed by the labour market and form their own businesses.

Law awareness campaigns

I invite stakeholders and community members to a meeting in which awareness will be raised about the Constitution and other laws of the country. The meeting will be held on 22 June at the Kokstad town hall at 9am.

The aim of the meeting is to empower residents of Kokstad regarding their rights, responsibilities and other issues regarding the law. The initiative has been prompted by recent incidents in which people misinterpreted the law and ended up violating the rights of others.

High fire season

This month marks the start of the fire season in Kokstad. Even though the municipal fire and rescue team is ready for the season, the effect of drought and shortage of water remains a big challenge.

Unfortunately, Working on Fire has taken their team of 22 grass fire fighters to other areas of the province.

This means that Kokstad is going to have less capacity this year to deal with grass fires.

I therefore ask the community to prevent all types of fire.
