THE Griqua Traditional Council chairperson, Gabriel Marais, congratulated two young Griqua men, who underwent the traditional practice of circumcision from December last year and returned home safe.

According to Marais, it is uncommon for young men from their community to undergo the traditional practice as it is not their culture.

“The council is pleased about these young men who showed braveness and followed the traditional passage of manhood instead of the medical [path] as many young men do.

“I appreciate this initiative because the young men have experienced a lot at the initiation school and this is going to bring unity to different tribes that exist in Kokstad,” said Marais.

The young men underwent the practice under initiation institute Indlondlo, which has been operating for many years in Kokstad.

Benny Khobo, the Indlondlo chairperson said for the past four years the Griqua community has supported the institution.

He said that male circumcision is mentioned in the Bible, so the institute won’t chase away young men if they want to do this regardless of their ethnic groups.

“In the institution, initiates are taught respect, responsibility and how to become useful in society,” added Khobo.

On Tuesday, a government event was held at the Shayamoya sport field to welcome and celebrate the safe return of 206 young men from their traditional circumcision.
