THE Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs portfolio committee is to hold public hearings regarding the traditional and Khoi San Leadership Bill starting next Tuesday and running until 22 September.

The committee will visit Kokstad on 20 September. The national representative for the KZN Khoi San people, Gabriel Marais, also the Kokstad Griquas Traditional Council chairperson, is calling on Griquas and traditional people to attend the public hearings.

He told Fever that Khoi San people want to be recognised in the country and run their own affairs.

“Griquas were the first people to arrive in the country and government should acknowledge that.
“Griqua people are scattered all over the country and have no land ownership.

“Once the Khoi San Leadership Bill is signed Griqua people will action traditional affairs structures.”

The proposed Bill seeks to include Khoi San communities in a law of traditional leadership.
