BRIDGES, roads and houses have been damaged by heavy rains that affected Matatiele and surrounding areas on Sunday.

One person reportedly drowned and a house was stroke by lightening in Ward 13. The road that links Matatiele and Maluti was flooded and motorists had to wait several hours for water levels to lower. Hadenberg Bridge was also flooded. Disaster teams from Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Matatiele Municipality have been dispatched to some villages to assess the damage. Matatiele municipal spokesperson Olwethu Gwanya said a full assessment of the damage is yet to be finalised and calculated.

She said municipal graders and casual workers have been deployed to assist.

“Eskom has been informed that some electric cables are damaged.

“The rain caused damage to many tar roads in the town and we ask motorists to be watchful of potholes,” said Gwanya.

She said when the assessment is done, the relevant departments will be informed to assist and deliver food parcels to the affected families.
