Helping to further students’ education

MATRIC pupils are preparing to start writing their final exams. At the same time, former Carl Malcomess High School teacher Nokhuthala Dlamini is making education more accessible.

Dlamini has been helping out with tertiary education application forms throughout the year. She is now busy distributing National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) application forms to schools in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Dlamini has turned her home in Kokstad into an office and, during her spare time, she helps young people to strive towards their careers. She also established a non-profit organisation, Simama Centre for Career and Professional Development, and worked in the Department of Education.

“I started the NPO after I discovered many pupils moving around the streets of Kokstad because of not applying to tertiary institutions. I am also trying to reduce the long queues at tertiary institutions.”

This year, she has distributed over 15 000 application forms to 84 high schools under the Umzimkhulu, Ixopo, Greater Kokstad and Pholela circuit. Other high schools in Eastern Cape also approached her for application forms.

Without expecting money, Dlamini helps matrics with online applications on her laptop, and travels to the Central Applications Office in Durban to submit application forms.

On September 13, she was welcomed by Ntsikayezwe High School teachers and pupils from Ntabankulu when she visited the school to motivate pupils about early applications.

“I receive invitations at gatherings to speak about the importance of education and early applications,” she said.
