A KOKSTAD man said that he was humiliated when police allegedly assaulted and searched him for drugs at his work place last Friday.

Nyameko Xorile (33) who works as a cleaner at the Kokstad bus rank said that he is still nursing pains on his body after the police punched him in his face and pushed his head against the wall during the raid.

“At around 2 pm police arrived at my work place and accused me of selling drugs. They pointed a firearm at me and said I must show them where I hide the drugs. They then told me to remove my clothes and further searched my body, embarrassing me in front of everyone,” said Xorile.

Xorile said that nothing was discovered from the search, however, he had to visit a doctor for his bruises and was given medication to get the swelling to go down.

“I feel humiliated for being accused of selling drugs because I am against crime. In my village I make sure that I don’t get involved in criminal activities and I even report people who commit crime in my presence,” Xorile said.

Xorile said that he is the chairperson of the Community Policing Forum in Shayamoya and had applied to work in the SAPS but his application was declined because of his age.

Xorile said that fighting crime is what he loves and was against police brutality. “The attack on me by the police just goes to shows that they need training and education on how to work cordially with people rather than being aggressive. I want police to pay the price for what they have done to me,” said Xorile.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed the case of assault with intent to cause grievously bodily harm following the incident and said that no arrests were made yet.

Xorile said that he was part of the Islam followers who joined Ramadan month of fasting until next month.
