IEC ready for elections

2016-07-29 06:00

THERE are five days before the 2016 local government elections and the Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed it is ready for next Wednesday.

Harry Gwala District has 347 voting stations.

Harry Gwala District IEC manager, Simon Lingani, confirmed the district is ready for elections.
Voting stations will be open from 7am to 7pm. Officials from SAPS, SANDF, Disaster Management and Co-operative Governance and Traditional affairs will assist in in any emergency.

In case of snow in some areas, 4x4s will be on stand-by for IEC officials who will be visiting stations. On Monday, voting stations will be open for special votes until Tuesday.

Lingani said no threats have been reported at voting stations in Harry Gwala.
“The state security agency will be on stand-by for any actions of intimidations, but for now no threats have been reported.

“All political parties have signed an election code of conduct. A R10 000 fine will be issued to any party that breaks the election code of conduct. If the case is serious points will be taken away.”

The Democratic Alliance has released a statement of dissatisfaction after a DA member was allegedly attacked by ANC members at Ntsikeni village outside Umzimkhulu during election campaigns recently.

The party called for KZN premier Willies Mchunu and provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala to investigate acts of intimidations and attacks.

Recently, an ANC candidate of Ward 1 at Umziwabantu Municipality, Bongani Skhosana was short and killed by an unknown man.
Skhosana was going to contest the ward, which is under NFP. He was buried on Sunday.

Lingani condemned the acts of intimidations and killings ahead of elections.
