Keep your children safe

2017-12-29 06:00

THE safety of children during peak season is very important at home, malls and on the beach.

Many parents think their children are safe at home or with relatives, however, anything can happen.

All4Women offers tips on keeping children safe.

•Before leaving home to go on an outing tell your child where you will be going and what you will be doing so they have some knowledge and expectation of the outing and the activities it will involve.

•Act out scenarios - play a little game where you and your child act out scenarios of what to do if you separated from each other. This will prepare him or her on how to react if the situation does arise. You should also tell the child who they can for help or assistance.

•Meeting spot - choose a spot where you and your child are to go to and wait for the other if you are separated. Try finding a spot with a distinctive feature such as a water feature or a structure that appeals to your child.

•Contact details - teach your child your telephone number and full name. If he or she is too young to remember this, write it down and put it in his or her pocket.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said people should be crime-conscious.

At home adults should make sure that gates, doors and windows are locked.

“Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone, just so they can be on the lookout if you leave your children at home,” said Wiid.

She said children must know how to contact parents, or carers, SAPS or a close relative in an emergency.

She said parents must teach their children about “stranger danger”.

“Explain to your child that men and women are strangers. They must not talk to anyone they don’t know, even on the phone,” said Wiid.

She advised parents or carers to use code words for those they trust to fetch your children and teach their children the words and tell them only to go with people who know the code word.
