THE annual King Edward High School Interhouse Gala took place last Wednesday.

Although the skies were looking particularly dismal and threatening, it was decided that the gala should go ahead. Faith was rewarded. The dark clouds lifted and the day was enjoyed by all, spectators and swimmers alike.

Competition was strong and it was pleasing to see the increase in the number of swimmers taking to the pool. The tussle between the houses Melville and Graham was intense and the final outcome of the gala was in doubt right up until the later stages of the gala.

In the final reckoning, Melville emerged as the winning house in both the primary and the high schools. Melville was also awarded the Spirit Cup.

Emmanuel broke three records on the day and was also part of the relay team that set a new open boy’s 4x25 relay record.

Last Friday, King Edward athletes competed at the Menlo Park Athletics Meeting as part of the Pietermaritzburg Invitational Team. Most of the King Edward athletes were placed in the top 10 in their respective events. Top performances came from Tristan Phizacklea for the boys U14 high jump who was placed first with a height of 1,70 m. Aaron Lombard came second in the U17 shot-put with a throw of 15,66 m. Kayla Harris came second in the U17 shot-put with a throw of 12,62 m, and first in the discus with a distance of 36,08 m. Unfortunately the evening events were rained out.

On Saturday, they competed at the AGN League where Kayla Harris and Aaron Lombard qualified for the ASA Championships in both discus and shot-put. Well done to all who took part.
