KOKSTAD B&B - La Teranga - won the National Tourism Award at the South African Small Business Awards 2017 hosted by National Small Business Chamber in Johannesburg on November 9 and the owner, the mother of five, Siphokazi Thiam, is thrilled.

La Teranga competed against many in the category.

“I entered in the Best Women in Business and Best Entrepreneur categories, but am happy to win the National Tourism Award as it is the first time I had entered the awards,” said Thiam, who owns three Kokstad B&Bs.

She started her business “small” in 2009 by converting her three-bedroom house into a B&B.

“People thought I was mad when I turned my three-bedroom house into a B&B, but today it is recognised throughout the country.

“In a couple of years, I want to own a hotel and establish a hospitality training centre for young people,” said Thiam.

She thanked her husband Hussein for her success and says she teaches her children to follow in her footsteps.

“Passion, love, loyalty and hard work drives me towards success and I won’t give up.

“On November 28 I am going to Spain to a business summit where I will be networking.”

Last year, the B&B earned the KZN Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur Award at the Lilizela Awards.
