INSTEAD of being harsh on criminals, seven-year Kokstad cop, Constable Thabo Disane (29), entertains criminals by joking with them to make them feel comfortable while in custody.

The officer deals with armed robbery, theft, rape and business robbery.

When Disane is not on duty he “turns his work firearm into a microphone” by emceeing at functions, and sometimes organises events.

“I am enjoying my work as an officer. I work four days as a police officer and during my four days off I organise and attend events as an emcee. Last year I was the emcee at the Matatiele Jazz Festival.

“I was also the emcee at a show hosted by musician, Zakes Bantwini in Harding. I have organised other big events where sometimes I deal with celebrities such as Cassper Nyovest, Naak Musiq, Ifani, Thokozani Langa and Naima Kay.”

Disane is the father of a five-year-old girl and is looking forward to being a role model to young people in Kokstad.

“I arrest criminals with a smile and I make them smile by making jokes. I always ask criminals what drives them to commit crime and some criminals go to social workers for counselling through me talking to them.”
