ERNEST Lujiva and his son Nkosinam were overwhelmed when their horse Schomane won R100 000 at the annual Dundee July, held in northern KwaZulu-Natal, last Saturday.

The horse secured first place after competing in the Grade one category for the first time.

The horse race has attracted many rural horse owners and jockeys from KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces. The event was established in 2005, initially attracting a small number of participants. Since then, it has seen phenomenal growth.

“Schomane raised the Kokstad and Harry Gwala District flag high at the event. The competition was tough but we managed to win,” said Lujiva. He said the horse will be trained for upcoming competitions.

Abongile Nzimande, who has been training the horse, said the victory was expected because of the hard work that was put in.

“Four horses that were trained with Schomane did not compete at the event because of injuries,” said Nzimande.

The horse racing committee from Kokstad applauded the victory.
