South African Police Services spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo said Uwynn Van Wyk was sentenced to 15 years on Monday for a crime he committed on March 12, 2018.

“It is alleged that at about 4.30 pm the owner of Vlei Cash Spaza shop at Whylde Road in Kokstad was coming from church. He was followed by a male who pulled out a knife and demanded money from the complainant. The man took an amount of R800. Just before he ran away, the complainant poured cold water on him, but outside his accomplice, Uwynn Van Wyk, was waiting for him,” said Ncongo.

He said that Van Wyk, who used to come to the shop regularly, ran away with the other man and the money in the direction of Twist Valley Township.

“Van Wyk was immediately arrested and appeared at Kokstad Magistrates court. Thereafter the docket was transferred to Kokstad Regional Court, where he was convicted after several court remands,” said Ncongo, who added that the seemingly harsh sentence was meant to send a message to criminals that theft will not be tolerated.
