POLICE are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 34- year-old man from Kokstad was stabbed in the stomach and head with a spear on April 2.

Mzwandile Mataka of Horseshoe Township in Kokstad said he was socialising at a local tavern when his alleged attacker entered and ordered patrons to move to the living-room area of the tavern.

Following the altercation inside, the man then followed Mataka as he made his way home and stabbed him.

“I left the tavern with my girlfriend.

“Along the way, the man followed us and started called me names and I did not respond. He came closer to me and stabbed me with a spear in the head and stomach,” said Mataka, who added that he held his intestines in his hand and collapsed next to his home after the stabbing.

Residents from the area called an ambulance and he was taken to EG and Usher Memorial Hospital in Kokstad.

He was transferred to Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg on the same day due to the severity of his wounds.

His stomach and head were stitched up and he was released from hospital on April 9.

Speaking to the Fever at his home after spending eight days in Edendale Hospital, Mataka asked police to make a swift arrest of the man who allegedly stabbed him.

“The man who stabbed me visited my house and apologised for what he had done and I did not accepted his apology. I want the police to arrest him and give him a harsh sentence to learn the lesson,” said Mataka.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed the case and said the man who allegedly stabbed Mataka has disappeared and police are looking for him as he is a known suspect in the area. Ncongo promised to make an arrest very soon.

“The man who stabbed me visited my
house and apologised for what he had done and I did not accepted his apology.

I want police to arrest him and give him a harsh sentence to learn the lesson.”
