Kokstad pupil wins bursary

A YOUNG woman from Kokstad was overwhelmed with joy when she was announced the winner of a study bursary to study at the Richfield Graduate Institue, via a competition run by theFever earlier this year.

In February, The East Griqualand Fever and Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology gave readers the opportunity to stand a chance of winning a R25 000 bursary to study further and the bursary was won by
Koksad resident Leiph De Waal (18).

Entrants had to send a 60-second video to the
EG Fever
Facebook page to motivate why they deserve to win or send a written motivation of 250 words and a picture to a stipulated e-mail address.

Last year, De Waal completed her matric with a bachelor’s degree from Kokstad College, however, she was unable to pursue her dream of studying to become a teacher right away due to a lack of funds.

“I was very happy when I received my results. However, because of lack of money, I did not apply to tertiary institutions to further my dreams,” said De Waal who added that her plan was to look for work so that she can save money to pursue her studies next year.

“I saw an advert in the Fever about the bursary, and I entered by sending a motivational speech on why I deserved to win. In March I received a notification that I had won the bursary,” said De Waal.

“The Fever has made my dream to come true and I thanked Richfield and theFever for changing my life for the better,” said an overwhelmed De Waal.

Her mother, Lenelda Abrams, said that she had been praying for her daughter [De Waal] to get a bursary because she could not afford to pay for tertiary fees.

“Leiph is a dedicated and disciplined child and I pray for her success. I am very thankful to the Fever and
Richfield for opening doors for her,” said Abrams.

De Waal said that she wanted to be a teacher so as to impart her knowledge to children when she finishes her studies.
