LULU Mphetswa (68) of Kokstad is living in the dark after the Greater Kokstad Municipality switched off electricity to her RDP house in Shayamoya on January 25.

Mphetshwa said she has a chest problem which she suspects is due to a paraffin stove that she is forced to use instead of an electric stove for cooking.

She told Fever that when the electricity was switched off she was not given a reason. “I have visited the municipality several times to ask why my electricity was switched off, but didn’t get answers. Instead, I was told to pay R300 each month for collecting waste,” said Mphetshwa who showed Fever a receipt for paying R300 last month.

She said it is not the first time the municipality has switched off electricity to her house. “Electricity was switched off in 2015 and I was told to pay R21 000 in municipal debt. I finished paying the amount in December last year and the electricity was switched back on. Switching off electricity worries me because I am forced to use a paraffin stove which makes me sick and it is dangerous to use candles at night,” added Mphetshwa.

She said she has applied to the municipality to get free electricity but has not received any response. “I am staying with four grandchildren, two are still in school and the others are not working. I am getting the R1 400 old-age grant each month and the money is not enough for groceries, school uniforms, a funeral policy and buying prepaid electricity.”

She asked the municipality to switch the electricity back on and to stop charging her R300 for waste collection because other villagers are not charged.

Fever sent questions to the municipality but no one responded at the time of writing.
