THE young people from Kokstad, who took part in a four-month youth leadership development programme that began in August, returned to Kokstad from Saldanha Bay on December 8.

The programme was un by the South African National Defence Force and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

Over 800 young people attended, 22 of whom came from all wards in Kokstad.

Attendee Phumlani Ntsingila thanked government for the programme because he was unemployed.

“I learnt many things on the programme like self-control, being organised and tackling challenges without complaining. My aim is to be a good role model to the community of Kokstad by helping people,” said Ntsingila.

The programme focused on discipline, leadership, teamwork, patriotism and volunteerism. In September they were taken to Thaba Nchu for more training.

Some of the skills taught included first aid, community development, drilling, fire fighting and community work, and the youth were told to practise in their communities.

Attendee Asanda Phungula said his task is to practise what he was taught.

“In the next two months I want to do community work by helping charity organisations, needy people and assist my community,” said Phungula, who wants to start his own business in the future.
