PHUMELELE Potwana (28), from Matatiele is chasing her dream of deejaying at nightclubs and is happy to work in a male dominated field.

Potwana, known as “Lady-Ocean”, who has spun the decks at many gigs, says at first she was scared to get into the industry, but was encouraged to follow her dream after meeting deejays in Durban.

“I am the only female DJ in Matatiele and most of the time I work with men. I am booked for gigs this festive season and am happy,” said Potwana.

On November 4, Potwana will spin the decks at the annual summer festival at the Eyethu Lounge.

She completed her national diploma in sport management at the Durban University of Technology and played rugby for female teams in Durban.

Between 2008 and 2011, she worked for Vibe FM as a sports anchor and the afternoon drive presenter. She also worked with Crown Gospel Music Awards founder Zanele Mbokazi on a campaign that visited schools to educate pupils about drugs and alcohol.

“I have worked with many people, now I want to focus on playing music at events and nightclubs to keep people happy.

“Music is therapy to me. I lost two children and play deep house music to forget the pain I went through.”
