Local author shares her story of hope and courage

IN an attempt to inspire fellow women, Phelo Madiba (31) wrote a book titled Even the Sweetest Roses Have Thorns. The book was launched in Durban on August 4.

Madiba is from the Ibisi village, just outside Umzimkhulu. Although her life has not been easy, Madiba said she feels she has conquered her challenges. She decided to publish the book to tell her story as a way of inspiring women who had lost hope and felt rejected, saying her story is an inspiration to women who have broken hearts.

“I got married at the age of 21, and things were not good during the marriage. I was banned from visiting friends, family, and furthering my studies. At times I had to sleep with tears running down my face because of emotional abuse by someone I trusted,” she said, adding that her life was changed for the better after she made the move and left the marriage in 2016.

Prior to her marriage in 2009, Madiba was studying accounting at Durban University of Technology, however her husband stopped her from completing her studies. In 2015, she was able to go back to her studies and graduated the following year. Now she works as an accountant in Durban.

“[I wrote the book] to fight depression and to inspire other women. It can be found at local bookshops.

“There are many people who go through depression and end up taking their lives. I am using social media like Facebook to inspire people and to fight sadness,” said Madiba.

Madiba said she is now busy writing a book about the history of South Africa. She invites anyone out there in need of inspiration to read her motivational pieces by visiting Emihle Phelo Madiba on Facebook.
