THE high number of young people who use drugs in Kokstad inspired local dancer Zandisile July to start up dance classes on weekends and holidays.

July established Born To Be Legend (BTBL) dance group in Kokstad to equip youth with dance techniques.

Young people who are between eight and 20 years of age have joined the group and shown interest.

July believes that young people are becoming involved in crime, drugs, and alcohol because they have nothing to do after school hours.

“The group contains of over 20 group members who do traditional, ballroom, ‘gqom’ and ‘panstula’ dances,” he said.

The group has already performed at a number of local events and will be performing at Dance Battle Phase One dance competition at Bhongweni Youth Centre on October 13, as well as at the Back to Kokstad event on December 26.

“Dancing can put food on the table and I want young people to get involved in it as a career, not just a hobby,” said July.

Group members include Anathi Matyholo, Thabang Mokoena, Ithandile Disane, Armani Van Der Merwe and Shaba Tshabalala.
