A LOCAL film will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival taking place on September 17.

The film, The Number, a film version of Jonny Steinberg’s book of the same name is based on the ins and outs of SA prison gangs and follows the life of an inmate, Khadija Magardie, who does time with the author.

The film is directed by Khalo Matabane and produced by Carolyn Carew and features myriad renowned actors, including Presley Chweneyagae of Oscar-winning Tsotsi fame.

Funders of the film, the KwaZulu Natal Film Commission congratulated production company Born Free Media on the screening.

Carol Coetzee from the KZN Film Commission said the screening was a proud moment for them.

The Number spent over 70% of its production budget in the province and created employment for local filmmakers and providers of related services. With the film being screened internationally, this will go a long way in establishing KZN as a choice film destination,” said Coetzee.
