BHUBESI FC striker Sbonelo Ndabeni, from Kokstad, has inspired many football followers with the club showing much improvement since he joined in May.

The team faced tough competition in the South African Breweries (SAB) League held recently.

Ndabeni was given the name “Ngoja” by his fans when he was still young.

His left arm was amputated after he was stabbed in 2011.

“I started playing football at the age of 11 and, in 2011, I stopped because I was stabbed in the left arm. In 2013 I returned, after my arm healed,” said Ndabeni.

He joined Real Aces FC from Bizana, scoring nine goals when the club participated in the South African Breweries (SAB) League under Alfred Nzo District last year. This year, Bhubesi FC played in the SAB League under the Harry Gwala South African Football Association, with the league ending last month. Ndabeni played four games for Bhubesi FC in the league and scored four goals.

“I played for several teams in Mount Ayliff who were pleased about my performance. I also train local young boys to become footballers so they can play in the Premier Soccer League in the future,” he added.

He said local schools also work with him to train young footballers.

“Having one arm will not discourage me from playing football, and I want to encourage disabled people not to underestimate themselves.”

On June 17, Harry Gwala District Municipality Councillor Ntobeko Mavuka applauded Ndabeni for his remarkable performance at the Ntobeko Mavuka Tournament held in Kokstad in June.
