KOKSTAD was a hive of activity as Spar Express officially opened for the first time in the small town of Kokstad yesterday, October 4.

The Gugwini Brass Band, which is made up of members of the St Johns Church, provided entertainment as they marched from Hope Street into the store alongside Greater Kokstad Municipality Mayor Bheki Mtolo, Deputy Mayor Karen Walker, Speaker Zolani Mhlongo, Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapholoba, and local councillors.

The store is owned by Lucas Mtumi, Colin Davenhill, Sharpley Wallar, Ivin Boosen, Eddie Bowler and Doda Mpakumpaku, who were born and bred in Kokstad. They worked hard to reach the top.

Having owned the local Shell Garage for the past few years, they wanted to expand their business to achieve their business goals and contribute meaningfully to society through economic participation.

The latest addition to the service station is a Spar Express that will be open 24 hours a day to assist locals and visitors with groceries, fast food, and other items.

Mtumi said they received an amount of R14 million from Ithala bank to develop the Kokstad area.

“We employed 63 staff, including management,” said Mtumi.

He said they have always wanted to open the Spar Express. Mtume and his partners had dreams to promote a culture of entrepreneurship and this is finally being realised.

Greater Kokstad Mayor Bheki Mtolo said he is happy to observe Shell Garage “growing up”.

“I am so excited this store has created such a huge number of jobs and we are promising to support them as communities” said Mtolo.
