WARD 22 Umzimkhulu community members have issued a strong warning to the ruling party, telling them to remove the name of a ward candidate.
They claim the candidate was only elected by a small group of people.

More than 100 community members from 11 villages barricaded the R56 with burning tyres between Retvlei and Kopi in Umzimkhulu last Friday.
They (community) warned that if Mcebisi Mbewana doed not replace the candidate they want removed, they will teach the ruling party a hard lesson.

“We just blocked the traffic for two hours. If this matter is not attended to we are going to stop everything here.

“This ward candidate that the party is pushing us to vote for was elected by people who are not members of the party. We elected Mbewana at a branch general meeting in January. Unexpectedly, we heard that another person has been elected by a small group of people,” said Zandile Njiyela (48).

Umzimkhulu mayor, Mphuthumi Mpawana, heard that R56 was closed and went to listen to the complaints.
He asked people to calm down and to stop protesting.

“I asked protesters to make a list of their complaints, which I forwarded to the regional leaders of Harry Gwala and provincial leaders.”

Locals dispersed peacefully but warned that they will protest again of their complaints are not addressed.
