KOKSTAD police are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten in police cells by five inmates. The incident was reported to Kokstad police on April 4.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo said that the man was detained when five inmates demanded money and drugs from him.

“The man told police that his body was covered with a blanket by inmates to avoid sounds when he screamed for help.

He was saved by police who entered the cell during the ordeal,” said Ncongo adding that the inmates allegedly involved had not yet been charged.

Ncongo said once investigations are complete new charges would be added to the inmates’ existing charges. — Supplied.
