UMZIMKHULU Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a 43-year-old woman in 2015. On October 8, 2015, the woman was at Ntsikeni village when she was approached by the man who forced her into the nearest bush and threatened her life.“The man took the woman to the bush and raped her repeatedly. The woman managed to flee and reported the incident to the police and a case of rape was opened at Ntsikeni Police Station,” SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.She said the docket was transferred to the Kokstad Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation. Ten days after the incident, the police investigation led to the arrest of the accused who was kept in custody throughout the trial.He was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and five years for kidnapping. The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, applauded the FCS unit investigators for securing a life-term imprisonment. “Gender-based violence cannot be tolerated and we will ensure that we deal with perpetrators to protect the women and children of this country,” he said. — Supplied.
