Man killed after asking for water

ASANDA Chere (22) from Shayamoya Township was allegedly killed by a man after he asked a young girl for water on January 6.

It is alleged that Chere and his six friends were on their way to welcome home two initiates and when they passed Extension 7 he became got thirsty and asked a young girl, who was outside a house, for water.

“A man came out of the house with two young men, who pointed at Asanda and accused him of being a thug.

“The man pointed a firearm to us, grabbed Asanda’s stick and beat him until he fell down,” said Asanda’s cousin, Thulani, who was at the scene.

He said Asanda was not involved in any crime and his death is unbelievable.

He was taken to EG and Usher Memorial Hospital with head and body injuries where died the same day.

He was buried in Shayamoya last Saturday.

His sister Nosipho said the family is devastated by what have happened to Asande as he was the family’s only source of income.

“Asanda worked at Spar and was an important man in the family. I want the man who is suspected of killing him to get a harsh sentence so he suffers for what he’s done,” added Nosipho.

His uncle Shanyana Chere, who was also at the scene, said the man who is suspected of killing his nephew also opened fire on him, but he wasn’t hit because he ducked.

“The man shot at me after I asked why he had beaten an innocent man. I am saddened because Asanda was humble,” said Shanyana.

SAPS spokesman Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed that police are investigating a case of murder and a 48-year-old man has been charged with Asanda’s murder and was released on R1 000 bail by Kokstad Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Asanda’s neighbour Thumekile Ntlangula said he is not happy about the bail and asked the court to give the suspect a harsh sentence.
