WARM greetings to readers of this column.

As the municipality, we kick-started our 16 Days of Activism campaign for No Violence against Women and Children in partnership with the commission of gender equality on November 27. The municipality gathered relevant stakeholders at the Matatiele Town Hall to deliberate on gender related issues. This comes as the 16 Days of Activism campaign takes place between November 25 and December 10 each year.

It is a common practice for us, as local government, to convene a series of dialogues on violence against women and children, and facilitate discussion on the causes of these social ills in a quest to find appropriate solutions. We however appeal to our people not to observe this important affair only over the next few days. It is a #356DaysCampaign and we are using the hashtag #HearMeToo.

We ought to continuously mobilise members of society, especially men, to join hands with government against child and women abuse.

So what can you do?

• Show support by wearing a white ribbon during this period.

• Volunteer in a support group or NGO that supports abused women and children.

• Speak out against women and child abuse.

The municipality further plans to host another community dialogue on rape victims on December 4.

Matatiele local municipality embarked on a programme that gives members of the public the power to make their voices heard. This was done in terms of Section 29 (i) and (ii) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, (Act 32 of 2000).

The Integrated Development Plan (IDP) community outreach targeted all 26 wards of Matatiele. The outreach programme was mainly aimed at presenting progress on current community projects and programmes within the wards and confirm community needs plus priorities.

The process also forms part of the National Imbizo Focus Week, which provides a platform for members of the Executive, Ward Councillors, and traditional leaders to undertake community meetings and Izimbizo. This in order to demonstrate government’s implementation of the IDP and to respond to issues raised by citizens, which impact on the safety, growth and development of our communities. The programme lasted four days and was attended by members of the Executive Committee, Councillors, Managers, Municipal officials, representatives from Alfred Nzo District Municipality, and government departments.

On behalf of the Matatiele local municipality council, I would like to extend a word of gratitude to all citizens of Matatiele for coming out in numbers to participate in decisions and government processes that affect them.

As part of the Thuma Mina Campaign launched by the President Cyril Ramaphosa in his 2018 State of the Nation Address, the Mayor Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla handed over Nomgavu Access Road in Ward 18. This road was prioritised by the community in April 2018 during the IDP Budget Outreach.

Furthermore, the Portfolio Head of Corporate Services & Ward 20 Ward councillor, Cllr Thembeka Dyantyi, visited Mountain View Internal Streets to assess progress on the project and address challenges that were raised during her monitoring visit.

“We are a destination of choice and excellence.”
