LET me take this opportunity to give a service delivery update to the communities of Matatiele. It is our responsibility to ensure that our community is well informed of recent accomplishments in their respective areas.

Transport Month: road safety is everyone’s business

This month government, and specifically the Department of Transport and its entities, will showcase transport infrastructure services in aviation, maritime, public transport and roads. This month will also be used to advance the country’s road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness about the economic benefits of the sector.

MLM continues to electrify rural areas

The municipality continues to address service delivery backlogs, with electricity being one of its main priorities. A number of projects, under way in Wards 3, 5, 9 and 18, bear witness to this.

Through these electricity projects more than 2000 households are being connected to the national electrification grid and jobs are being created. As we close our first quarter of the current financial year, the municipality introduced Siza Makaar, the contractor appointed to electrify 420 households, costing R10 684, in Mahangu Ward 9.

Promoting tourism through sport

The Ced/Matat Annual Heritage Race started in 2013 to reinstate the 24km race between Cedarville and Matatiele that used to take place in the early eighties and promote the role of sport in developing athletics in all events - road running, cross-country track and field, etc.

Ced-Matat Athletic Club believes that taking part in sport not only builds social cohesion among people, it also acts as a deterrent against crime. It is also about exposing creativity, both mentally and physically, in human beings, especially the youth.

The purpose of this initiative is to have a plan that assists in building sport development from grass-roots level and attract neighbouring provinces, and Lesotho, to participate and promote tourism in the Matatiele area through sport.

The race has three distances - 21.1km, 10km and 5km. The 21km starts at Lunda to North End Stadium on October 15. Entry forms are available at the municipality, Elegant Man stores and the Cedarville Town Hall.

Launch of ward war rooms realised

In preparation for the Operation Masiphathisane road shows and the launch of Matatiele local war rooms, the municipality, on Tuesday October 3, launched the remaining 24 ward war rooms out of a total of 26 wards. Further to this, on October 13, the Matatiele Local Municipality will officially launch local war rooms and conduct stakeholder engagements at the Matatiele Town Hall.

Book for all driver’s licence codes in Matatiele now

The municipality, through the community services department, has respondent to a cry from the people of Matatiele - that of not having testing grounds for codes C1 and EC driver’s licences. Now, people no longer have to travel away for their driver’s licence test.

Thus far, 10 people have passed their code C1 driver’s licence and one passed their code EC driver’s licence. We encourage the community to book their driver’s licence test at our public safety unit and bring with them the following documents – a certified copy of their ID, proof of residence and R345.

The municipality has also procured five motorcycles for traffic law enforcement. The 300cc dual-purpose motorcycles are light and nimble and can travel on gravel roads as well. They will be used to alleviate traffic congestion in town and to rush to accident scenes when the need arises. Maluti and Cedarville will also be regularly patrolled with these bikes – road safety is everyone’s business.

Matat2Pont goes from strength to strength

The 2017 Matat2Pont was a massive success. Numbers have grown steadily each year and this year the event had 129 riders in total. The event attracted riders as far as Dubai, UK, Swaziland and Cape Town.

“The riders absolutely loved the three-day challenge and we had only positive feedback from them,” said Mr Maartens.

Each day provided a new experience in terms of terrain and weather conditions. Some sections were extremely demanding especially in the wet weather.

We are a destination of choice and excellence.
