I THINK it’s now proper to say season’s greetings, dear reader. It’s hard to believe we’re now counting days before we break for Christmas.

Electronic media, a vehicle for public participation

To enhance transparency in relation to municipal programmes, the municipality initiated the “Talk to your Mayor” and “Portfolio Head Radio” programmes.

The aim is to update the community of Matatiele about departmental plans for the current financial year and the progress made in implementing projects.

On November 8, the mayor and chairpersons of committees (portfolio heads), the Speaker and Chief Whip presented their departmental projects and progress reports on the Alfred Nzo Community Radio breakfast slot. This was followed by a field visit by the municipal leadership.

Led by the acting mayor of the day, Cllr Thembeka Dyantyi, the delegation visited Khotsong TB Hospital in Matatiele to assess progress on phase three of this R436 million project. Fourteen local small micro medium enterprise contractors have been awarded contracts worth a combined value of R8.1 million for the Khotsong TB Hospital.

A further R94 million is set aside for local business opportunities, mainly construction work, for upcoming contractors in and around Matatiele. The Khotsong TB hospital project is valued at over R436 million and has seen the flagship project transforming Matatiele town into a pillar of hope for communities.

“The identified amount forms part of the stipulation of 35% for the value of the project work going to SMME’s living within the area in which the project takes place,” said Unathi Maholwana, CDC SMME Manager.

One of the 14 SMMEs benefiting from the project is Sibongile Shangase.

The owner of Tankimzwa Catering and Construction from Maluti outlined how the project has assisted in terms of “skills training and development”.

Another SMME on the project is Qhamani Project, owned by Phakama Evans. Evans expressed gratitude for the boost her business received through this project. On behalf of Matatiele LM Council, I extend a word of gratitude to Alfred Nzo Community Radio Management for making it possible for the municipality to share information with the people we serve.

Department of Health brings services

At a visit by the provincial legislature to Matatiele, as part of the legislature outreach, the Eastern Cape Legislature visited Ward 7, Hillside under Matatiele Local Municipality. During the visit the Ward 7 community complained about the lack of access to the clinic services due to the long distance, and a request for a mobile clinic was made. November 6 saw the Department of Health deliver on its promise and the Ward 7 community were able to access health service through the requested mobile clinic. We are a destination of choice and excellence.
