I THINK it is now proper to say “season’s greetings to you, dear reader”. It is hard to believe we are now counting the days before we break for Christmas.

Your municipality believes in providing you with information that is easy for you to access. Knowledge does not only give you power, if used effectively, it can improve your life.

It is for this reason we will not stop keeping you continuously informed of policies and programmes that affect you, and the progress made in implementing them.

Say ‘no’ to children and women abuse

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign takes place from November 25 to December 10 each year.

Over this period government convenes a series of dialogues about violence against women and children, holds discussions about the causes of this social ill tries to find solutions.

Through the dialogue sessions government will interact with community members who experience violence and abuse. It is important that the 16 Days Campaign is not viewed as a stand-alone event. It is another leg of the #356DaysCampaign and #CountMeIn, which aims to mobilise society, especially men, to join hands with government against child and women abuse.

What you can do

• Support the initiative by wearing a white ribbon for this period.

• Volunteer at a group or NGO that supports abused children and women.

• Speak out against women and child abuse, and encourage those in need to do the same.

The municipality and government departments have programmes to educate the public to speak out against domestic violence. At Ramohlakoana location there will be information sharing on gender based violence.

Manguzela will have a community dialogue on gender based violence campaign and Mehloloaneng will educate about gender-based violence.

Community registration outreach programme

The Department of Social Development, in collaboration with the Matatiele Local Municipality, Sassa and all government departments operating within the Matatiele jurisdiction, embarked on a campaign called Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (Icrop), on November 29 at Ward 16, Mechechaneng village.

Icrop promotes interaction with the public, assisting those who can’t access social grants, and strengthens dissemination of government information.

Public participation practitioners trained

The municipality, through the Municipal Public Participation and Rapid Response directorate and EC Cogta, had from November 20 to 24 conducted training for public participation practitioners, ward committees, ward support assistants and community development workers as part of capacity building.

The local government Municipal Structures Act, 1998, provides for the establishment of ward committees as a means to encourage community participation in municipal matters.

A ward committee is an area-based committee whose boundaries coincide with the ward boundaries.

Ward committees and ward support assistants are the link between the councillor and the community and they raise issues about the ward to the ward councillor.

They have a say, on behalf of the community, in decision-making, planning, projects, integrated development planning, performance management and allocation of funds that council may decide on that will affect the ward.

The Matatiele community is therefore asked to work hand in hand with is these structures at the sessions in their wards for the development of Matatiele Local Municipality.
