MATAT VIEWPOINT

2018-04-20 06:00

Warm greetings to all readers of this column.

Welcome once again to our weekly update column. We have started the fourth quarter of our Financial Year, where the municipality was engaged with a four– day Integrated Development Planning (IDP)/Budget Outreach programme to present draft budget for 2018 / 2019 – 2021 Medium-Term Expenditure and Revenue Framework.

FREEDOM MONTH

April will forever resonate with South Africans as a month that saw the first democratic elections in 1994, giving birth to freedom and constitutional democracy in our country.

The 1994 election marked a turning point that saw the previously disadvantaged become part of the South African political processes. Thus, the proclamation “SA belongs to all who live in it”.

The 1994 breakthrough promotes the values of freedom — an integral part of our constitutional democracy. Freedom Day is celebrated on April 27. This is in order to commemorate the historic participation of all the people of South Africa in the first free and fair democratic elections.

On April 27 2018, South Africans are called to take the opportunity to celebrate the fruit of our democracy. It is time to reflect on the progress we have made as a country in moving South Africa forward.

IDB / BUDGET OUTREACH WEEK, APRIL 9 TO 12 2018

In accordance to Section 29 (i) and (ii) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, (Act 32 of 2000), the municipality embarked on IDP/Budget Community Outreach for the 2018/2019 financial year between April 9-14 2018.

The outreach targeted all 26 wards of Matatiele. On behalf of the Matatiele local municipality council, I would like to extend a word of gratitude to all citizens of Matatiele, for coming out in numbers to participate in decisions and government processes that affect them. The outreach programme was mainly aimed at presenting to the public, the draft budget for the 2018 — 2019 financial year. Planned projects and programmes for the next financial year were also shared with communities.

Addressing the community of ward 10 at Lunda community hall, Mayor Councillor Momelezi Mbedla urged members of the public to work with their ward Councillors on issues of service delivery.

“We don’t want to be a government or municipality that makes decision without community participation and comments”, said Mbedla. He further addressed the community of ward 18 at Mnyemaneni community hall, where main challenges were among other things — roads that got damaged by the recently experienced heavy rains.
