Warm greetings to all readers

Welcome once again to our weekly update column.

Basadi Bayaiketsetsa Matatiele

The Basadi Bayaiketsetsa Agricultural project is a women-run project in Malubaluba Ward 2. It is achieving significant results across areas of Matatiele, creating opportunities for the underprivileged people to support and sustain themselves.

Basadi Bayaiketsetsa started operating in 2013 with seven members. They are now supplying Pick n Pay with 25 bundles of spinach and sell to hawkers in Matatiele. These members are planting vegetables and aim to venture into chicken production.

In response to Vision 2030, our municipality has prioritised women-led projects under the Special Programmes Unit. As the municipality, we are in line with the new growth path, which sets the trajectory of economic development to improve people’s lives and enable economic growth. The Matatiele local municipality purchased a water tank, seedlings and wheelbarrows to assist this project to grow. The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform is also assisting this project by providing seedlings.

Although Basadi Bayaiketsetsa is making strides in helping the historically disadvantaged, the reality is that just like many similar projects, it is faced with constant challenges that make it difficult to carry out its agendas. Key among these is a lack of proper support and funding. Unfavourable weather conditions also affect production.

“Equipping community-based enterprises to develop, operate, compete and maintain a commercial business is an overarching challenge to poverty alleviation, wealth creation and economic growth and development in Matatiele,” said Mayirha Kanunu from the Basadi Bayaiketsetsa Agricultural Project.

She further encouraged the youth to join the project so that members can transfer the skills to them to carry on with the legacy project. “We also want to sell chickens and involve our youth as we venture into planting tomatoes which will be turned into tomato sauce and potatoes into chips.”

“We are a Destination of Choice and Excellence.”
