WARM greetings as we kick-start the winter season.

We are now in the last quarter of the 2017 /2018 Financial Year. It is at this stage that the speaker of council hosts an open council day where the mayor is expected to table budget for 2018 / 2019 – 2021 Medium Term Expenditure and Revenue Framework. This year’s open council day will be held at the Ramafole hall in Ward 24 at 10 am.

Working with Matatiele local municipality, the department of Sports Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) together with the Department of Education commemorated the International Museum Day. The event was held at Maluti Civic Centre in Matatiele on May 17. The occasion saw pupils from five schools from Matatiele/Maluti region participate in an essay writing competition. This is a build-up to the provincial and ultimate national essay schools writing competitions to be held later this year. Under the topic “celebrating our heroes”, pupils were tasked to write about our very own local hero Tata Alfred Nzo.

This informative ceremony was graced by the deputy executive mayor, Councillor Sandile Sello who delivered a key note address. Sello encouraged the youth to celebrate the heritage and backgrounds of our icons in order to keep their legacy alive. Emphasis was placed on research and writing of positive stories about Africans, since most stories written in the past paint a gloomy picture of Africa. Sello further made a pleasant announcement, “Alfred Nzo District Municipality has committed to be more biased towards awarding bursaries to youth perusing careers in the arts and creativity spheres, this in order to support the youth that excel in art than academically”. Speaking on behalf of the Department of Education, Miss Thami Tenza said that teachers are the reflection of the future they will probably never get to see. Encouraging the pupils in the spirit of the Mandela centenary, Tenza shared a quote from legendary icon “education is the best weapon we can use in liberation”. The adjudicators then selected three essays with the number one essay being the one to represent the Alfred Nzo District at provincial level. There were also prizes to be won. Position three holders received a digital camera, with the runner-up scoring an I-pad. The winner, Minentle Zondi walked away with a brand new laptop.

The high rate of crime activities at Ward 13 in Mpharane village moved the community members to take action. In collaboration with the Matatiele Local Municipality through the office of the speaker, Matatiele/Mt. Fletcher SAPS cluster, faith-based sector and Government departments gathered for a special prayer day. Women came in numbers to say “No” to the killing and rape of young and elderly women. A shocking incident that left the community of Mpharane and sounding areas living in fear is that of an 88-year-old woman who was brutally raped at her home. Brigadier Majikijela indicated that every year there is rape and murder in the area. This has made Ward 13 lead in crime statistics in Matatiele and the Mount Fletcher cluster. She warned people against taking the law into their own hands, and encouraged them to report criminals to the police instead. She promised the community that police will leave no stone unturned in dealing with criminals.
