WARM greetings and welcome once again to our weekly update column.

Heritage and Tourism month is upon us! Matatiele Local Municipality, together with Mehloding Community Tourism Trust, will on September 22 celebrate this important month in style. This will be at the Mpharane sports ground in Ward 13. This event is one of those that gives us an opportunity to reflect on the abundance of talent and natural resources at our disposal. It is therefore up to us all to further develop and take care of it.

The Matat community is invited to celebrate this day with us.

Government considers communication to be a strategic element of service delivery and a major tool used in promoting and communicating government programmes. The Municipality held a two-day communication strategy action plan review workshop at the Matatiele town hall. The five year communications strategy was developed in 2016 and provided guidelines and reference tools around government communications as a key support service for service delivery. These included government communications strategy, media management, stakeholders’ engagement, communications for development, understanding of government policy, marketing & advertising and managing the corporate identity of government. Welcoming delegates, Cllr Thembeka Dyantyi emphasised the need to enhance communications between government and members of the public.

Deliberations included the need to aggressively communicate government’s programme of action to communities and stakeholders in line with five priorities and Back to Basics pillars. Ways and means to strengthen platforms to communicate with stakeholders and communities as contained in the municipal IDP were also discussed. Furthermore, it was outlined that the 2018 – 2019 Communications Action Plan, through the Communications and Special Programmes Unit, should provide communication support to all sector departments, agencies and civil society formations.

Among other attendees were representatives from the Government Communications & Information System (GCIS) Eastern Cape Department of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the office of the premier. The workshop was also attended by councillors, managers, government departments, members of the media, Community Development Workers, Ward Support Assistants, and Communications Unit from Alfred Nzo District Municipality. Deliberations centred around creating a brand with which the people of this municipality can associate themselves.

The community, customers, investors and tourists should tell a good story about “brand Matatiele” and the leadership should sell/represent such a brand. The local media, including new kid on the block Voice of Matat Radio, appreciated the positive relations between government & media houses. The Municipality would like to extend a word of gratitude to everyone who attended the workshop.

“We are a Destination of Choice and Excellence.”
