WARM greetings to all readers of this viewpoint.

Heritage and Tourism Month celebrations

Matatiele Local Municipality is to celebrate our treasures by asserting our African identity for the 2016 Heritage Month in order to encourage and inspire communities in Matatiele to identify and recognise our treasures.

Recognition of living human treasures ensure that their knowledge will be recognised, protected, preserved and promoted to ensure continuation and authentication to avoid myths or misinterpretations.

The theme should encourage communities to value the knowledge and skills of their human treasures.

Highlights of Heritage Month:

22-25 September: Matat to Point (bikers festival) at the country club

24 September: Mehloding Heritage event in Mpharane

30 September: Matatiele Tourism Month celebrations at Matatiele Town Hall.

Cedarville-Matat Heritage Race

Matatiele Local Municipality, in partnership with Ced-Matat Athletics Club, will host the annual Ced-Matat Heritage Race on Sunday 25 September starting at 6.30am. The route is on Route 56 between Cedarville and Matatiele. The race will commence at the Swartberg branch outside Matatiele and the finish will be at the Cedarville sports ground.

Ced-Matat Annual Heritage Race is an annual race that was started in 2013 to reinstate the 24km race between Cedarville and Matatiele that used to take place in the eighties. It also promotes the role of sport in developing athletics in all events, including road running, cross-country and track and field, etc.

Ced-Matat Athletic Club believes that engaging in sport as a way of building social cohesion not only acts as a deterrent to criminal activities, it is also about giving free expression and creativity both mentally and physically to people, especially the youth.

The purpose of this initiative is to build a plan that assists in building sports development from grassroots level, to attract neighbouring provinces to come and participate and to promote tourism in the Matatiele area.

It also provides economic stimulus into a previously disadvantaged areas that will boost local business revenue, and create jobs for community members. Entry forms are available from the Matatiele Municipal offices and from the Cedarville Town Hall.

That is all from us for now. Until next time, stay safe and be blessed. Thank you sweet people from sweet Matat, a destination of choice and excellence.
