Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint

2016-09-30 06:00

WARM greetings to readers of this viewpoint.
Welcome once again to the Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint. It is our responsibility to ensure that our community is well informed of recent accomplishments at their respective areas.

The Matatiele Local Municipality believes in providing people with information that is accessible to them, and which they can use to improve their lives, based on their needs, encouraging people to participate actively in the democratic processes, and keeping people continuously informed of policies and programmes that affect them and progress in implementing them.

Mayor engages with business owners
Mayor Cllr Momelezi Mbedla engaged with local business owners at a business breakfast on Wednesday at the Matatiele Town Hall.

This programme formed part of the mayor’s 100-day programme of engaging stakeholders to strengthen working relations, moving forward.
“As this new council, we will be organising engagements with various stakeholders in Matatiele to strengthen working relations for the benefit of Matatiele community. We don’t want to move alone during our term of office,” said Mbedla.

When asked to outline their plans on how to develop the economy of Matatiele, he said: “As the municipality, we are responsible for creating an enabling environment for local economic development.
One of the goals of Matatiele Local Economic Development Strategy is to build facilities for maize storage and processing and turning it into locally consumed maize meal, samp and animal feed.”

He said the Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Matatiele Local Municipality set aside R1,3 million for a grain storage facility - a silo - during 2015/2016 financial year. This initiative to build this facility was done after consulting the farming fraternity in Matatiele, both commercial and emerging farmers, and after seeing the difficulty that farmers face after harvesting because they do not have silos for their produce.

Silos will create a conducive environment for new economic opportunities for local people, specifically farmers through building facilities that will steer agro-processing in the agricultural sector.

The mayor announced that there is a five-hectare site that is available in Matatiele that can house up to eight silos, at the moment we have only one on the site.
In addition we have 40 hectares available in Cedarville as an additional site for a farmer support unit. The site (Erf 1) is fenced, has running water, and electricity is available.

The municipality would like to extend a word of gratitude to all business owners who had attended the engagement.
That is all from us for now. Until next time, be safe and be blessed.
Thank you sweet people from sweet Matat, ‘A destination of choice and excellence.”
