Matatiele Local Municipality condemns killing of traffic officer

The Matatiele Local Municipality is in mourning after the murder of its traffic officer who was on duty last Friday. Don McKenzie (32), was shot while patrolling in High Street in Matatiele. He died at the scene.
Police confirmed that the motive for this cold-blooded killing has not yet been established, but are following close leads. McKenzie’s service pistol has also been reported missing.
At McKenzie’s memorial service on Wednesday, 2 November 2, the Mayor of Matatiele Local Municipality, Cllr Momelezi Mbedla condemned the killing saying such incidents are sporadic in Matatiele and that the municipality has no room for such action and called for a harsh sentence for the perpetrator(s).
Matatiele community have sent their condolences through social media and other platforms, saying that Matatiele has never experienced such a tragedy before, and the spirit of ubuntu was shown during this difficult time.

The sudden death of McKenzie does not leave a void in his family alone, but also the Matatiele Local Municipality, in particular his immediate colleagues in the Public Safety Unit. We will remember him through his good deeds and dedication. May his soul rest in peace.

His family has confirmed he will be laid to rest on Saturday 5 November at 2pm at Full Gospel Ministries in Matatiele.

Mayor responds to Matatiele SMME concerns

In September the Matatiele Local Municipality mayor was invited to address Matatiele SMMEs at a business breakfast organised by The Informer newspaper.
Some of the concerns SMMEs raised were the lack of training opportunities for them. Economic Development and Planning through the Local Economic Development (LED) Unit has organised training for Matatiele SMMEs (contractors).
Training was facilitated by the National Home Builders Registration Council and the Department of Human Settlements in collaboration with the National Urban Reconstruction & Housing Agency. About 150 women and youth in construction were trained. The focus of the training was on regulatory and compliance issues on housing building environment, housing delivery programmes, quality assurance in house building and application of funding.

Matatiele Music Festival

Preparations for our sixth music festival are under way. This festive-season event acts as a catalyst to increase tourism influx and attract potential investors to Matatiele. It is also an initiative that contributes to the economic and social development of the community.

The festival will be held on 17 December at the old Matatiele rugby fields. Confirmed artists thus far include the Jaziel Brothers, Ringo, Professor, DJ Bongs, Casper Nyovest, Kwesta, Zahara and Oskido. Local artists will also be featured and their names will be announced in the next viewpoint.

Tickets will be available from Computicket and Shoprite stores. Local artists who are interested in performing are invited for auditions tomorrow, 5 November at the Maluti Civic Centre from 7am.

Thank you sweet people from sweet Matat, a destination of choice and excellence.
