Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint

2017-02-24 06:00

WELCOME once again to the Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint. It is our responsibility to ensure that our community is well informed of recent accomplishments in their respective area.

The Matatiele Local Municipality believes in providing people with information that is easily accessible, and which they can use to improve their lives, based on their needs. We encourage our people to participate in democratic processes.

Government taking services to the people

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in partnership with Matatiele Local Municipality and the Department of Health, the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (Dedeat), the Department of Social Development and other government departments partnered in taking government to the people through an Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (Icrop).

Icrop was held at Mangolong village in Ward 23 on 9 February. The programme is geared at bringing various government services closer to rural communities as guided by government’s Batho Pele principles.

Icrop is the programme mandated by government to reach various wards in the remote areas of the Eastern Cape and embark on a number of service delivery innovations to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of its services.

The agency and the Department of Social Development conducted household profiles in the ward, which revealed that many people live below the poverty line.

Some of the challenges identified prior to the programme included that most children do not have birth certificates, children living with disabilities do not have access to special schools. There is a high rate of drug abuse, unemployment is rife, there is a lack of knowledge about HIV/Aids and crime-related activities are witnessed.

As a short-term intervention, the agency co-ordinated all partners to take services to the people of Ward 23 and handed over 200 food parcels to address the immediate needs of the identified households.
Sassa, the Department of Home Affairs, Dedeat and other government departments rendered services and provided information to communities.

Ward 23 councillor, Sicelo Maphasa appreciated the opportunity given to rural communities.

“Government should strengthen communication with communities and in doing so they must work together to ensure that services are not duplicated and that there is the real intergovernmental relations.”

Disability rights on public transport

On Wednesday, the Alfred Nzo Department of Transport in partnership with Matatiele Local Municipality held a public Safety awareness session for persons with disabilities in Matatiele.

The session addressed challenges that disabled people face with public transport in and around Matatiele.

The Department of Transport has a mandate to change the status quo for the better, while the municipality’s designated groups strategy compels the municipality to prioritise the well being of disabled people.

It is our wish to bring the stigmatisation and suffering of persons with disabilities to an end.
One of the ways to do this is through awareness sessions, to educate transport operators and road users on Disability Rights.
