AS part of celebrating Sanele Ndevu’s birthday, several young people from Matatiele cleaned Mulisana Primary School’s walls and handed over school shoes and toiletries to the pupils last Friday.

The school is a farm school outside Cedarville with 39 pupils from Grade R to Grade 6.

The youth, who are Ndevu’s friends, painted the walls of the school and fed pupils cake and meat. Matatiele club DJ Phumelele Potwana was among the young people who painted the school.

It was a joyful day for the teachers and parents as they saw the happy faces of their children.

School principal Nomfundo Mokoatle thanked Ndevu’s friends who spent the day with the pupils.

“Most pupils are from poor homes that cannot afford much. The school needs more support from businesspeople,” said Mokoatle.

She said 19 pupils have no birth certificates and their parents have tried several times to get them. “Life is not easy in farming areas but the school is trying by all means to do good for the people,” said Mokoatle.

School governing body chairperson Zameka Dolo was honoured to see the pupils wearing their new shoes.

“I have asked for donations from friends and businesspeople for the pupils so they can wear warm shoes during winter.

“In the past years I celebrated my birthday with friends and family but this year I wanted to change the lives of children,” said Ndevu.

Last year, he and his wife Nobuhle donated school shoes to over 50 pupils from five schools in Matatiele as part of giving back to the community.
