Matatiele youth unites for better roads

YOUNG people representing various structures and organisations in Matatiele showed unity last Thursday, when they called for government to maintain rural and provincial roads.

They handed over a memorandum of demands to Xolisa Jakuja of the Alfred Nzo District Department of Transport at a peaceful march in Matatiele. Jakuja promised to forward the memo to relevant people.

Young people in attendance said the bad condition of roads on the R56 road between Matatiele and Kokstad, Matatiele and Mount Fletcher and the T12 between Matatiele and Maluti caused accidents.

They said many died in these road accidents.

“Many future leaders are dying because of government who neglects our roads. We want government to resurface all rural roads in 26 wards including provincial and national roads,” said Ndima Mtoto, the Matatiele South African Youth Council chairperson.

Mtoto said that government must install speed humps in high accident areas and put up road signs.

The group also complained about stray animals on the roads and asked government to employ rangers.

On March 20, Mayor of Matatiele Municipality Momelezi Mbedla told local media, roads were a concern in the area. He said many roads are damaged because of heavy rains, but the municipality and Department of Public Works were working hard to maintain some. He committed that, roads between Mvenyane and Cedarville would be surfaced in the next financial year. According to Mbedla, some roads in Matatiele were constructed prior to the formation of the municipality in 1996 and these roads have deteriorated. Mbedla said that the municipality has purchased a set of construction plants for road maintenance.
