HARRY Gwala District Municipality mayor Mluleki Ndobe applauded the 2018 Comrades Marathon winner as an ambassador of the district.

Bongumusa Mthembu, who hails from Bulwer under the Harry Gwala District, became the first South African, other than Bruce Fordyce to win the race twice in a row.

The 2018 comrade’s champion took his third Comrades win by finishing the race in 05:26:39. Speaking during a breakfast celebration held at the Harry Gwala District offices in Ixopo on Friday, the mayor said they are proud of the work done by Mthembu.

“Today we have a Comrades Marathon winner in our district municipality. We had a discussion with him on how are we going to help him to go forward with the good work that he is doing with running,” said Ndobe.

Ndobe described Mthembu as man of honour as he put the district, the province, and South Africa on the map.
