HARRY Gwala District Municipality Mayor, Mluleki Ndobe has admitted that water and sanitation programmes are a hard battle to win, but they won’t rest until they find a permanent solution to ensure communities live in a hygienic and healthy environment.
Speaking to the Himeville community to monitor progress on water and sanitation projects that are under way, Ndobe vowed to ensure that communities get clean water.

A Himeville resident, Nomfundo Radebe, said people used to relieve themselves in the veld because of a lack of proper toilets. “We were living in an unhygienic situation and saw human excrement flowing down the streets where our children play,” said Radebe.
She added the newly built bathrooms have showers and are clean. Ndobe said there were only nine households not connected to the water and sanitation system due to technical hitches, but said that 300 people now have flushing toilets connected to the system.

“There are temporary measures we have embarked on for the nine households to ensure they live in a hygienic environment,” said Ndobe. He said they were to monitor the abstraction works set to augment the capacity of water that is being distributed to Underberg and
Himeville. and said that 75% of the project has been completed.
