PRESTIGE Security Services in Kokstad says it is concerned by police’s failure to open a case after a vehicle, belonging to Greater Kokstad Municipality Mayor, Bheki Mtolo, was involved in an accident with their Chevrolet bakkie last Thursday.

SAPS spokesman Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed at the time that no case had been opened and did not give reasons.

The accident happened on the corner of Barclay and Hawthorne streets.

Jacques Naudé, the security company owner, said their Chevrolet bakkie was used for technical matters, and has been written off.

“The bakkie had three staff members inside when the accident occurred. The mayor’s car was [alleged- ly] travelling at high speed and it [allegedly] failed to stop at a stop sign and hit my bakkie badly,” said Naudé.

He said two staff members received minor injuries - one was seriously injured on the leg and face and was transferred to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

“I thank God for saving their lives because the accident was bad.

“Jaws of life were used to remove my employee who was trapped inside.”

He said the mayor did not come to him to express any remorse about the accident, instead he sent some municipal employees to his office on Monday, who asked him about the condition of the injured employees.

“Accidents do happen everywhere and I don’t blame the mayor for the accident as I was told that he was not driving when the accident occurred.

“I want police to open a case and investigate the cause of the accident,” Naudé said.

GKM communication officer Nomzekelo Selani confirmed the mayor’s vehicle was involved in an accident with the security company’s bakkie.

She said the vehicle was driven by the mayor’s brother, who is his driver.

“The municipality wishes the hospitalised people a speedy recovery.

“It is not true the mayor was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred as people have said on social media. Investigations are being undertaken by the municipality,” Selani said.

Prestige Security Services confirmed that a case of negligent driving was opened in Kokstad yesterday.
