A MEMORIAL service was held for Kokstad College High School teacher Carla Brand at the school hall last Saturday.
In a packed hall Pastor Petrus Fouche from Kokstad NG Kerk told mourners to “release Brand and pray for closure”.

Brand died last month after a long struggle with cancer.

Tributes began pouring in when the news of her death was announced on the school’s Facebook page last week.

Eunice Peters, a former teacher, couldn’t hold back tears as she read a tribute.
“Mrs Brand, the mother of all, was down to earth. She accommodated all of us at the school, and the school will miss her for the good things she did.”

The service was attended by the Department of Education Kokstad circuit manager Cedric Mseleku, teachers, friends and family.

Brand started in 2005 as an Afrikaans and geography teacher, and also contributed in netball, swimming and was an athletics coach.

Many people couldn’t speak during the service, choosing rather to write their thoughts in a book that was sent around before the service.
Brand’s husband, Louis, wrote: “Carla Brand is the strongest and bravest person I have ever known.”
Joezette Hannah Snyman wrote: “There was always something special about you that filled my heart. RIP Carla Brand. You were such a great example to many.”
Brigitta Mackenzie wrote: “Thank you Carla for the beautiful legacy you left us, always joyful and with a smile and even encouraging words for others.
“Your story has touched many lives even though you have left us, your light still shines bright through all the lives of those you inspired. Rest now brave warrior.”

Brand’s daughter Elme said: “The funeral won’t be made public to everyone.
“It’s a family affair only.”

A white dove was released by pupils after the service.
