Municipal manager’s future unclear

2018-02-02 06:00

THE future of Dr Nkosazana
Dlamini-Zuma municipal manager, Nkosiyezwe Vezi is unclear as his extended one-month contract comes to the end on January 31.

At a heated council meeting which lasted 10am to 7pm on Tuesday, it is alleged the name of a man, who is to be acting manager when the contract ends, was raised but Mayor Ngeneleni Mncwabe told Fever she will talk to the ruling party about council re-solutions and then talk to the media.

“I want to confirm that Vezi is the manager at this stage and that his contract ends on January 31,” said Mncwabe.

Vezi’s contract ended last month, but was extended by council for one month.

The relationship between Vezi and councillors from opposition parties has been unpleasant and he is accused of sidelining councillors.

Economic Freedom Fighters councillor, Sipho Jaca said the municipality is going down because managers work as they please and a municipal staff member has complained to the EFF about being fired illegally.

“We need a manager who will get the municipality clean audit outcomes and treat councillors equally. Job creation, growing of economy, good treatment of staff and delivery of services must be a priority,” said Jaca. The municipality received a disclaimer from the Auditor-General and opposition parties blame management for this.

Inkatha Freedom Party chief whip, Sifiso Phakathi said the next manager must work hard to earn clean audit outcomes because the municipality is a disgrace.

Items debated in council meeting include the registering of poor people so they get indigent services, and the salary increment of councillors.

The municipality was formed after Ingwe and Kwa Sani Local Municipality merged in August 2016.
