THE Department of Health shocked attendants at a social cohesion and moral regeneration event held in Ixopo recently when it revealed the shocking statistics of teenage pregnancies in the area. The two-day event was hosted by the Ubuhlebezwe Municipality at Ofafa village in Ward 3 on May 14 and May 15, and was attended by pupils from various schools.

According to the Department of Health, out of 2 092 pregnant woman, 21% were teenager girls in the Ubuhlebezwe Sub-district.
The sub-district had 834 HIV-positive cases and 201 attempted suicide cases reported last year. Councillor Nancy Jili, the Ubuhlebezwe Municipality Department of Social Development Portfolio head, said the municipality is upset about the high number of young teenagers who become pregnant.
“We need to build communities with positive values and develop a caring society by reviving the spirit of ubuntu,” she said.

Government departments like the SAPS, Health, Social Development, Education, Sports and Recreation, and non-profit organisations, were part of the event.
